Author, Activist, Political Analyst

MUHAMMAD HALLAJ (1932 - 2017)

Born in mandated Palestine, Muhammad earned a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. He taught political science at Jacksonville University and the University of Jordan before moving to Birzeit University in the Occupied West Bank as professor, then dean, then Vice-President for Academic Affairs. Hallaj was appointed Director of the Council for Higher Education in the West Bank and Gaza.
     In 1981 he had a sabbatical as Visiting Scholar at Harvard University. Subsequently barred by Israeli authorities from returning to his homeland, he settled in the U.S.
     • Edited Palestine Perspectives magazine - 1983 to 1991.
     • Directed Center for Policy Analysis on Palestine in Washington D.C. 1991-94
     • Member of the Palestine National Council in 1991.
     • Headed the delegation on refugees after the Madrid Conference in 1991.     
     • Board member of Palestinian Independent Commission for Citizens' Rights.
    • Hallaj spent his adult life as a frequent speaker and prolific writer on the subject of Palestine.
